iPad Mini 4 Features and Release Date: What We Could Really Expect

By -

Apple is known chiefly for iPhone and iOS. In 2014, Apple attempted to retain the user base of both products by launching iPhone 6 and iOS 8 in last September. However, Apple doesn’t want to be identified solely in terms of iPhone or iOS. There’s a huge market for iPad Tablets and Apple want to score big in that market.

Apple has introduced so types of iPads. iPad Pro, iPad Air and iPad Mini are some of these varieties. Like Sony is experimenting with its Xperia device lineup, Apple is trying to bring as many users as possible under the umbrella term ‘iPad’.

iPad Mini is one of the flagship lineups that have been witnessing soaring popularity. iPad Mini devices come with large screen and a slew of exciting features. Apple has released 3 iPad Mini devices so far. These devices are iPad Mini, iPad Mini 2 and iPad Mini 3. All these models received accolades from users. Apple’s next release will reportedly be iPad Mini 4.

What type of features iPad Mini 4 will put on the table? That’s something that the whole tech circuit is wondering about. In this article, we’ll try to gain perspective on this. We’ll also try to have an idea when iPad Mini 4 may release.

Apple hasn’t mentioned anything regarding the release of iPad Mini 4. In the absence of leaks and insider reports, there isn’t much speculation over the specs. As a result, we don’t have much sources to gather info.

iPad Mini 4 features

Display of iPad Mini 4

iPad Mini 2 is often called iPad Mini with Retina Display. The original iPad Mini lacked this feature. iPad Mini 3 also came with Retina display. We can expect iPad Mini 4 to come with something better. At least, we can expect the presence of Retina display. Both iPad Mini 2 and 3 had 7.9 inch diagonal screen with LED-backlit. The display in both devices had multi-touch capacity and IPS panel. The resolution in both devices were same; 2048 x 1536px and pixel density 326 pixels per inch. Both iPad Mini 2 and 3 has fingerprint resistant oleophobic coating.

We can expect iPad Mini 4 to have a bigger screen and better resolution display. Its display may also be water and dust-resistant. Neither iPad Mini 2 nor 3 comes with anti-reflective coating. iPad Mini may have that coating and a fully laminated display.

Dimensions and weight

iPad Mini 2 and 3 has almost same dimensions. The height (7.87 inches), width (5.3 inches) and depth (7.5mm) are same in both devices. There’s no reason for Apple to bring a change in iPad Mini’s dimensions, and we don’t have much expectations in this area either. iPad Mini 2 and 3 were similar in weight as well; the Wi-Fi versions weigh 331g and Wi-Fi+Cellular version weighs 341g. iPad Mini 4 will probably have same weight.

Chipset

Both iPad Mini 2 and 3 run on A7 chip with 64-bit architecture and M7 motion coprocessor. The original iPad released with A5 chip. iPad Mini 4 could release A8 System on chip. Apple’s latest toy, the iPhone 6 is equipped with A8 SoC. The iPad Air 2 also has A8X chipset. The M7 motion coprocessor should also be upgraded to M8 motion coprocessor.

Touch ID

The original iPad didn’t have Touch ID. iPad Mini 2 didn’t have it either. iPad Mini 3 arrived with fingerprint identity sensor. iPad Mini 4 may release with unique fingerprint identity sensor where unlocking phone would require fingerprint passcode. For enhanced security, such settings are very important.

Camera of iPad Mini 4

How well a device will be received by users depends heavily on the quality of Camera the device has. Apple has disappointed us last two times. iPad Mini 2 and 3 released with the same camera specs which the original iPad featured. All three devices had 1.2MP front camera, 5MP back camera, 720 HD video rendering, face detection and backside illumination.

All three cameras come with autofocus, Hybrid IR filter and five element lens, f/2.4 aperture and HDR photos. The only difference is that the original iPad camera didn’t have panorama mood which both iPad Mini 2 and 3 sport.

Our expectation from iPad Mini 4 are quite a few, more so because iPhone 6 didn’t show us any light on the camera department. iPhone 6 had a 8MP rear camera. There are plenty of Android devices which sport 16-20MP camera. Apple is pretty much behind them in the race. Apple however, could change this with iPad Mini 4, by giving the device a powerful camera.

Connectivity Options

There isn’t much difference between iPad Mini, iPad Mini 2 and iPad Mini 3 when it comes to connectivity options. All three devices have Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi+ Cellular and Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity options. iPad Mini 2 and 3 are hit the stores with CDMA connectivity while iPad Mini had HSPA+ and GSM options. The last two versions iPad Mini also had LTE support while the original iPad Mini had just data only option.

As for iPad Mini 4, we strongly expect Apple to add NFC support. iPhone 6 features the near field communication technology. It’s high time Apple adds this facility to the upcoming iPad Mini 4. On iPhone 6, NFC support is confined to Apple Pay. On iPad Mini 4 however, the support could be extended.

Cellular Options

Cellular options for iPad Mini 4 won’t be much different from the options for iPad Mini, iPad Mini 2 and iPad Mini 3. Sprint Nextel, Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile will be the carrier for iPad Mini 4 just like three other iPad Mini versions.

Release Date iPad Mini 4

It has almost become a rule of thumb that Apple will showcase its devices in fall. iPad Mini 3 was announced in October this year. iPad Mini 2 was unveiled in November 2012. So hopefully, iPad Mini 4 will be showcased in fall 2015.

The rumor mill is not active right now, otherwise the internet would have flooded with speculations over iPad Mini specs and release date. Perhaps we are the first to make speculations about the device. We do hope in the forthcoming days, lots of exciting details about the device will be revealed and we’d be able to cement our speculation.
